The Silent Seven

February 1, 1932.

There are a number of these earlier stories that have been reprinted in paperback format but, from what I have read in several places, the paperbacks don't necessarily contain the entire story. Fortunately, the Shadow stories are being reprinted today in, as far as I know, in their entirety, two stories to a book. The price for these is around $15, and is incredibly cheaper than trying to buy the original pulps.

Also, the pulps were made out of cheap paper so, even if you can find one, the odds are in won't be in very good condition.

Anyhow, the Silent Seven is a group of master crooks who are linked with the Faithful Fifty, their underlings. What the Silent Seven didn't expect was to have one of their own murdered, and some guy take his place.

The Shadow has a couple of disguises and there is reference to his face being strange with a 'parchment, masklike' expression. This again indicates that his original face was terribly disfigured in the past. This story also has the first time Detective Joe Cardona meets the Shadow. Clyde Burke, Burbank and Harry Vincent are also in the story.
