Shadow Strikes #1

Somebody is decapitated while at the Cobalt Club, where Lamont Cranston hangs out. Margo Lane and Harry Vincent make their appearance in this issue. Margo goes to a psychic reader and ends up being drugged, while Harry gets in trouble on his own.

The Shadow sees some woman driving a car and seems to recognize her. A madman appears, who is obviously Rasputin. The Shadow realizes the woman he saw is Anastasia, who was supposed to have been killed when the royal family of Russia was massacred by the revolutionaries.

The interior artwork is very well done, and the entire story has the appearance and feel of one of the original pulp Shadow stories. The cover is a little unusual, though, in that the Shadow is using a machine gun rather than his .45's. Still, both the cover and the interior artwork are vastly superior to most of the later Shadow comics that were put out, the story is better, and the work is truer to the actual Shadow mythos than later comics.
