Star Trek: Discovery: Desperate Hours

This is a really good novel that has both the Enterprise and the Shenzhou involved. We also get a more detailed examination of Saru's background as a member of a prey species and we get to learn more about both Spock and Burham's backgrounds on Vulcan. There's also a problem with Saru's attitude about Bernham.

The ships end up at the Sirsa III colony when something happens that destroys a mining rig at sea and over 900 people die. There's some political problems of a shady nature going on along with something under the sea that is violent and aggressive, launching an attack on the colony's capitol.

So the two starships and their crews will have to deal with something that can throw stronger and stronger drones against them, figure out how to destroy this thing without at the same time destroying the entire planet and, at the same time, find out just what has been going on in the colony.

Oh, by the way. Spock and Burnham both end up in the belly of the beast and their own survival is threatened over and over. Worse yet, the starships may end up destroying the craft while the two are sitll in it.

I like the way the story dealt with both ships and their crews, the way it helped the reader understand more about the background of some of the crew and way it described the various levels of action.
