Star Trek Discovery Season 2 Basic Card Set

What I am going to do is show the cards from the basic set that fit the episode and then comment on the episode.

Brother

A lot of good stuff in this episode, especially the arrival of Captain Pike and his group. The seven strange signals is a good plot device as it automatically sets up a lot of things for the entire group to check out. Burnam's finding out Spock has seen the signals when he was young is a very interesting thing as is the fact that Spock is supposedly on a leave of absence from Starfleet. Also, I like the new engineer's character.

New Eden

I really like Amanda's character. She tells Michael that Spock escaped which means Starfleet will be looking for him. The episode is really good, especially finding a group of humans on another planet that have developed a religion that combines things from various other religions. Tilly's work on keeping the colony from being destroyed is also good. Seeing someone that died five years before is obviously going to be a major problem for her.

I also like Pike's resolution at the end of the episode. I think this is one of the best episodes of season 2.

Point of Light

This episode deals with both Discovery and the Klingons. As to Discovery, Spsock's mother has gotten his medical records. She finds a drawing Spock did when he was young and it's the Red Angel. Michael remembers she hurt Spock on purpose to keep him from being taken by Vulcan logic extremists.

It's complicated on the Klingon world with Tyler and L'Rell having a baby which could get them into major trouble. They kill the troublemaker, fake two deaths and survive. I like the complexity of the Klingon section because it seems to give us more of an insider look at what is going on with them. The Red Angel/missing Spock line is also still interesting.

An Obol for Charon

Sort of a complicated title. Charon could refer to the being that ferries people across the river of the dead but it's also the name of one of Pluto's moons.

The Discovery comes cross a huge, intelligent sphere that is dying and wants Discovery to store it's knowledge. Saru is dying and Tilly still has trouble the the ghostly parasite of the girl that died five years earlier. I like the way things worked out with Saru and the parasite thing does at least have a reason for attacking.

Saints of Imperfection

We find out exactly what is going wrong with the mycelial network that resulted in the parasite in Tilly. Culber is found. I think this episode was pretty good too.

The Sound of Thunder

A Kelpian episode. We find out what the culling has been about and the Discovery almost gets into a war with the group that has been taking the Kelpians. Saru's sister is part of the episode. This really shows that if the two sides had worked together than this whole thing about taking the Kelpians from the planet would never have been necessary. Sometimes it's necessary for a third party to look at what is going on and bring a fresh perspective to everything.

Light and Shadows

Here is where, for me, the quality of the main plot goes down. To me the whole thing with Control, the needle-in-the-eye thing and so on is simply a version of the Borg. His whole body doesn't change outwardly but inwardly it does. Also, the things going on with Section 31 and Spock show that Unit 31 is an out-of-control group that will do whatever they want to without anything being done to stop them, something which continues on through Deep Space Nine.

Michael gets back to Vulcan to find Spock and discovers that he has some kind of mental trouble. Spock's father becomes involved. The whole thing with the instantly-modified-and-now-evil probe early in the episode is interesting and scary. Did it come from the planet that made the spaceship from Star Trek: The Motion Picture?

The season up to this point I feel was going reasonably well but now the rest of the series turns incredibly dark. I wish some other plot had been developed.

If Memory Serves

A major episode. A review of the original Star Trek: The Original Series episode about Talos IV. Michael takes Spock there and they are able to get his mind straightened out but at a price than Michael has to pay. Culbur and Stamets are having problems. Section 31 gets punked. (Good. I don't like them one bit.) The pace of things is picking up.

Project Daedalus

It turns out Spock is innocent of murder. The Control station is checked, there's a lot of bodies floating around it and one of the crew dies. It's a dark episode but it's still well done.

The Red Angel

We find out Control built the Red Angel suit. We also find out how Michael's parents figure into all this. Michael is set up to die, sort of, as a form of trap to get the Red Angel which turns out to be someone Michael knows. Section 31 wants to do something which would actually help but things go very, very wrong.

Perpetual Infinity

We find out what happened to Burham's mother and how much power Control had achieved. The Discovery crew decides to upload the sphere's data to the Red Angel suit but Leland gets half the data and Burham's mother ends up back in her future time.

Through the Valley of Shadows

A new signal appears over a planet with a Klingon monastery on it. The place has time crystals and Pike goes there to get one, finding a fully grown man who is the son of L'Rell and Tyler. Pike can get a crystal but it will come with a price.

Burnham and Spock investigate a Section 31 ship but the crew is all dead except for one who is under Control's control. They find out magnetism can destroy Control so they take off back to Discovery. Soon an entire fleet of taken-over Section 31 ships arrive to try and take the sphere's data.

Such Sweet Sorrow Part 1

The Discovery crew does something very logical. The transfer everone to the Enterprise and then plan to blow up Discovery and destroy the sphere's data. Unfortunately, logic doesn't always work as the sphere has protected Discovery from destruction. Tilly meets a friend of hers and a plan is made to get Discovery and the data to the future, out of Control's reach. Meanwhile both ships will have an attacking fleet of Unit 31 ships.

Such Sweet Sorrow Part 2

A massive space battle opens up. Fortunately allies arrive and the Enterprise and their friends are able to hold off the Unit 31 fleet long enough for Discovery and Burham, as the Red Angel, to get through a warp to the future. It's probably one of the best space battles I've every seen if not actually the best.
