Therese and Isabelle redo of my Goodreads review

So, differences between the book and the movie are many. In the movie Therese arrives at the school when it's not in session and looks through the place remembering what had happened.

The book has an entirely different opening with none of the adult Therese scenes. In this case both the girls are already in the school. The sex scenes are very different and more numerous then in the movie. There are other differences so it seems to me that whoever made the movie decided the book didn't provide enough material to make a full movie so they had to add a lot of things and change some other.

The story as the book has it goes this way:

1. The opening has girls shining shoes while they are being watched by a monitor. Both Therese and Isabelle are there shining shoes.

2. Isabelle is the school's best student.

3. Some specific classes are mentioned including sewing, gymnastics and Chemistry cosmography and ethics.

4. At the beginning Therese seems to hate Isabelle.

5. Isabelle is 18, Therese is 17.

6. The girls are all living in the same large room rather than the private rooms shown in the movie.

7. There's a specific time system set up. There's an inspection by the monitor at 7:25 in the morning. The girls put their shoes on at 7:30 and form groups at 7:35. At 7:40 the prior rings a bell and the goes go to breakfast. At 8:00 breakfast is over. From 8:00 o 8:30 is study time.

8. Isabelle seems to be ill.

9. Therese is in the lavatory and Isabelle comes in. They make out.

10. Therese says her mother might remove her from the school at any time since the mother is needy and seems to want Therese close by.

11. Several time there are night scenes when the other girls are asleep in the large dorm room. Therese goes to Isabelle's section (they are separated by curtains of some kind.) Each time they do sexual things ranging from kissing to Therese using her fingers to bring Isabelle to an orgasm.

12. Isabelle says she will take Therese to a doctor in town as the monitor ordered.

13. Then there is the scene from the movie where the girls go to a place where people can have sex. It doesn't really work out for them and they leave as in the movie.

14. They return to the school.

15. Therese's mother pulls her out suddenly and she never sees Isabelle again.

Which brings up some questions. Why didn't Therese write Isabelle as soon as she could and try to arrange some way they could still each other, perhaps when school was not in session. To me it's like both girls just gave up on what had developed into a very romantic and sexual relationship.

Then the book adds information on censorship and an afterword section.

This goes into how Therese and Isabelle was going to be the first third of a book by her, her early books not selling well and the effects that had on her along with how censorship had an effect on her work.
