Electronic Identity Crisis (Doorways of the Soremadian Book 1)

This is a unique variation on tg stories. In this case Dorsey Carney is in a group that explores extra-terrestrial civilizations. (Obviously this takes place in the future.) He's attracted to Charity, one of the women explorers.

They go through Stargate SG-1 type gateways and are exploring something when there's an explosion. As a result, Dorsey ends up in the body of a female robot. He has to deal with this and, at the same time, deal with the way other people are reacting to him and deal with the end of his dream of being with Charity.

Things get even stranger, though, as the story progresses. She has unexpected physical changes, still has to deal with prejudice (because she's a robot) and has to try to rescue some other explorers on what could very well end up as a suicide mission.

The story succeeds as a science-fiction story and also as a tg story. I'm definitely going to read the second book in the series.
