If I Was Your Girl

Amanda Hardy. Recently moved to another city to live with her father. Having to adjust to a new school in her senior year. So far pretty normal.

But not really. Amanda had tried suicide. Amanda was not always Amanda. She had been born Andrew and new from very early on that she was trangendered. She knew she was a girl and, fortunately, she was able to make the transition fully. (The author explains she compressed the time it takes to actually do a full transition.)

Amanda is pretty and smart. She makes friends with a pot-smoking girl. She makes friends with a guy named Grant and things start to heat up between the two of them. Amanda really likes Grant but just can't bring herself to tell him her history.

Amanda makes friends with other girls and everything seems to be going okay until she ends up being betrayed by a girl she thought was a friend. It's a major betrayal and the question becomes can Amanda ever deal with this? Has she lost all of her friends and will she have to move back in with her mother in another city to escape what has just happened?

It's a really good story except for a couple of points.

The art teacher is not able to show up and for an entire quarter Amanda and another girl don't seem to have a class to report to. In addition Amanda ends up cutting a lot of classes. It takes the school an entire quarter become it realizes Amanda isn't in art class and the school never seems to catch her class cutting.

I just find it unusual that she could have missed that much class and her grades hadn't seemed to suffer and her father was never contacted by the school over her class cutting.

Other than that I consider the book to be extremely well done
