Sammy

Sammy has a brother, Jack, who is a true thug. Allie, a neighbor, is his friend and lets him try on her clothes. One day he makes the mistake of coming home without makeup removed and his mother hits him so hard she knocks him down.

The book follows a pattern of having a chapter taking place during their sophomore year and then a chapter taking place during the junior year. I don't really understand the need for doing it this way as I would have preferred things to go in a chronological order.

Anyhow, a lot of things are covered including Sammy being bullied on the bus, a Halloween party, Sammy having his face slammed into a locker, an out-of-school severe beating, more hatred from his mother, a suicide attempt, etc. Then Sammy's parents do something that surprised and shocked me, both. Something that belongs in the middle ages.

This is one of the stories that deals with parents who are totally refusing to understand what is going on with their tg child. It also shows just how dangerous it is for someone in school (someone anywhere, actually) to become known as tg.

The story also shows just how important it is to have someone understand the tg person and be willing to help them when they can.
