The Boy Who Woke Up A Girl
This takes place in the future where machines exist that can change a person's body into whatever form they want. If you're under 20 you can change once a year; otherwise once every five years.
The main characters are Oliver and his friend Liam. Liam wants to break a taboo and change into an attractive girl.
This is met with boos, hisses and a principal threatening him. He threatens to change Olivia (the name Oliver picked for his girl form) and Olivia runs out of the office, only to be attacked by a drone. (Drones are ubiquitous in the future. The principal is confused over an official clearance for what Olivia did so he tells her that he will make her next year at the school hell.
Olivia has to deal with being forced to take part in a boy's gym, use a boy's showers and hatred from most of the girls in the school. Questions remain: will he lose his one friend, Liam. What's this about a group that meets that feels the way he does and, even more important, what is this about an experiment?
It all makes for one of the author's best books.
