The Last to Go

From People magazine, January 21, 1991

Tyne Daly fights a mawkish war of attrition in this unfocused drama. First she loses her husband (Terry O'Quinn) to a younger woman. Then the kids, played by Annabeth (Mystic Pizza) Gish, Tim Ransom and Sarah Trigger, start to move away. The melodrama is conveyed via minor pomp and circumstance rather than character. We get two decades of Halloween costumes, marking heights on a wall in pencil, birthday parties, anniversaries and weddings.

Even the darker stuff is conjured up in easy-to-grasp signifiers, like Mom's guilty fantasies about the tattooed gardener. Though Daly can still trip your emotional buttons, she is forced to operate around too many obstacles in this film. Grade C-
