Battle On

If you're going to write a book about a television series this is basically the best way to do it. He starts out noting that the series does play around with the timelines. The shows have action, humor and history material. Xena takes her place among television heroines.

There's also an influence from the Hong Kong martial arts films, by the way.

For each episode of the first three seasons (which is as far as this book goes), the book examines what happens in the episode, has remarks on the episode, then has a reality check (examining what happened in relation to actual historical things going on) and then the author gives his own rating to the episode using a 5 point scale.

This is, to me, an excellent way to examine a series since you can see how things tend to fit together, what they are based on and what kind of message they are trying to get across to the viewers. The author also includes a bibliography which is another positive point for the writer. In addition, the book is not boring at all; he puts a good bit of humor into his writing.

I wish the author would have done a book covering the remaining seasons of the show. I thoroughly enjoyed his writing.
