Book of a Thousand Days

The story takes place in an Oriental-like land. The two major figures are Lady Saren, who is of the gentry, and Dashiti, who is a mucker, one of the poor people of the land. She has the ability to sing songs of healing that can help people. She becomes Lady Saren's maid, but as soon as that happens she ends up imprisoned with Lady Saren in a tower.

Lady Saren had been offered to a violent and vicious leader and had not agreed to marry him right away. Her father was angry with her and sentenced her and her maid to live in a tower with a bricked-up entrance for seven years or until she 'came to her senses.'

The first part of the book deals with their life in the tower and their battle against rats and Lady Saren's depression and other problems. The second part of the book deals with them attempting to survive in a nearly ruined land.

Involved in all of this is the guy who is actually in love with Lady Saren, or he thinks he is, anyway. The lady wants her maid, Dashti, to pretend to be her in all dealings with Khan Tegus, the guy who loves Lady Saren. This leads to a lot of problems for Dashti.

Basically, Dashti is attracted to Tegus herself, but has to do everything for her lady and not herself, and at the same time stand up to the violent leader who Saren was engaged to by her father. It's really a good story and very well written.
