Substitution Method

This is the first book in a series of books that is being turned out based on the Eureka television show.

I love the show. I've bought all the DVDs and re-watch episodes from time to time. I think it's an excellent program with good characters and interesting plots. I had high hopes for the first book in the series, but I was quite disappointed.

I would describe the book as Eureka on valium. It takes about two-thirds of the book before something starts to be done to solve the problem, which is houses and people disappearing from Eureka, being transported somewhere else, and the houses and people that were there being transferred to Eureka. Basically it means that the first two-thirds of the book is one repetitive incident after another, and then gets tiring.

There's no sub-plot to the book like their often is in the series. The book is about one thing only, the particular problem they are dealing with, and doesn't really even attempt a b-plotline.

The good thing is that the characters are in character, and talk and act like the ones do in the actual television series. They also throw just about everybody from the series into this first book, including General Mansfield.

Still, overall, a disappointment.
