Addy's Surprise

Addy is about to have her first Christmas as a free person but she misses her father, brother and little sister. She wants to buy her mother a scarf as a present but is torn between doing that and donating the money to the church to help other blacks who have escaped slavery. Her mother needs a lamp so she can sew more easily, but also thinks about giving the money she's saved towards that to the fund.

The church helps the blacks who arrive to find a place to live and get a job since they are arriving, like Addy and her mother did, virtually penniless and friendless.

There's a special dinner at the Church and Addy ends up getting a gift she really, really, really wanted!

An interesting examination of the conflict between what one wants to do and what one knows is the right thing to do, even if doing the right thing means you will have to do without something you want.
