Josefina's Surprise

This story is about the ranch's preparations for Christmas celebrations, but it's also about Josefina's feelings about her mother who had died a year previously.

It shows just how important the celebrations are to the people and how much work was involved in preparing for them. Josefina's mother had made a special cloth for the altar for the celebration, and the cloth is badly damaged from water, mice and mildew related to some very bad weather and flooding the area had experienced earlier.

Tia Dolores says it's possible to repair the cloth, but Josefina and her sisters are not so sure. They all pitch in to help, though, and gradually the girls come to terms with the loss of their mother.

The historical section adds more information on the celebrations that the people performed in relation to Christmas time.
