Meet Kaya

This is the first book in the series about Kaya, a Nez Perce Native American of 1764. The book has an excellent factual section about the Nez Perce Native Americans and the type of life they lived.

This first book in the series about Kaya tells about her and her horse. Kaya is a young child and has to learn how to behave properly when she places the lives of two children in her care in danger by not properly paying attention to them. As a punishment, she and other children are given a whipping to help the children learn that they must all work together, that they all share responsibility for each other.

The book is delightful in showing how their daily lives were lived, how the Nez Perce raised horses, fished and gathered their other food and even how they held a courtship dance.
