Kaya and Lone Dog

In this story Kaya befriends a wild dog that is going to have puppies. Some others in her village warn her about how dangerous the animal could be, but it seems to talk to Kaya, in a way, and she has no problem around her.

Some young twins that Kaya is watching have not yet learned how to obey properly, and one of them ends up endangering himself when he sneaks off to visit the wild dog and her new pups, running instead into a large bear that was about to make the small pups its breakfast.

In the end, Kaya must also realize that not all wild animals can be domesticated to become part of village life, and that they need to be allowed to have their independence.

The historical section has a good explanation of the vision quest that young people went on to find their spirit helper.

Another good book in the series.
