Nellie's Promise

Nellie and her two sisters are still staying with Samantha, the events taking place about a month after the events of Changes for Samantha. Things threaten to fall totally apart when Nellie runs into her evil Uncle who had taken all her money, used it for drink, and then abandoned her and her two sisters.

The uncle threatens to come after her and take her and her sisters back which, at the time, he had a legal right to do. Nellie chooses not to tell Samantha and the relationship between them goes downhill as Nellie dwells more and more on what could happen and undergoes a personality change.

Meanwhile Nellie's sisters seem to be getting on very well with Samantha, causing Nellie to become somewhat jealous of her. Then one day her Uncle shows up at the house and Uncle Gard and Cornelia tell him they want him to sign away the rights to his kids so they can adopt them.

He gives a nasty reply, wondering how much they are willing to pay him, and Nellie's future is on the line.

It's a good, though somewhat upsetting story, and the historical section supplies more information on what happened to orphans at that time.
