The Stolen Sapphire

This is a Samantha mystery novel. Samantha and Nellie are sailing for Europe with their French tutor, grandmother and step-grandfather. While on the trip an archaeologist shows them the Blue Star Sapphire and, in a sudden loss of electrical power, the sapphire is stolen.

Suspicion seems to fall on the French tutor, especially with a mysterious note she receives. Although there are possible suspects, the emphasis is on her. It's up to Nellie and Samantha to find a way to prove that it wasn't their tutor that was the thief.

There are other suspects, including a not-so-tamed monkey. The two girls begin to uncover some clues to what actually happened, but time is running out since, once the ship reaches port, the tutor is due to be taken into custody.

It's overall a good story although the lights going out in the room just when the archaeologist is displaying the sapphire is a little too convenient and not really explained.
