CountryMouse's Diary

Part 5

Rainbow swirly bar

Wednesday, November 26, 1997: I am finally back from a "catastrophic hardware failure" (as the person who does work on my computer assessed it)! That occurred on October 28th. The hard drives (and other innards) had to be put into another/new (bare-bones) computer (a Pentium/166!--this happened last night, November 25th). I got some reading done during these four weeks without a computer of my own: "Far Afield" by Susanna Kaysen (if you'd ever like to know about life on the Faroe Islands, read this book!); "Houses of Stone" by Barbara Michaels; "Babylon 5: To Dream in the City of Sorrows" by Kathryn M. Drennan; several mousey children's books; "A Home At The End Of The World" by Michael Cunningham (superb book!); and more mouse books. I am currently listening to the book-on-tape, "The Mozart Effect" by Don Campbell; and I'm reading "Miss Bianca and the Bridesmaid" by Margery Sharp.

As for my Tamas: Bobby, my desktop Tama, fared better through this ordeal than I thought he would and got home safely. As for my other Tams: Angie 1 and 2 are not nearly so bothersome with the sound turned off ::grin:: (why didn't I think of that *before*?!). I still consider any age they reach beyond 21 days/years to be artificially-induced longevity due to excessive pausing for mouse sanity! :-) I also now have 4 GameBoy Tamas going, although they are all asleep at present (one with a tummy-ache--eep!). I've added a few more goodies to my store of Tama accessories and will be putting a few more pics up within the week (I hope!). There is Tamagotchi candy here in the States now!

Thursday, November 27, 1997: Today is Thanksgiving Day here in the USA! I hatched a new little desktop Tama and named him Pilgrim, in honour of the day :-) He is soooo cute! He's taking his little babytchi nap right now (8:32am).

Sunday, November 30, 1997: Pilgrim, my desktop Tama, became a tamatchi yesterday! The angels, Angie1 and Angie2, are still here. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the angelgotchi "pray for you"...maybe that's why they are still here? If so, then that's really nice of them!

Monday, December 1, 1997: My angelgotchi, Angie1 and Angie2, went home to Angel City this morning at 8:19am. I wasn't paying attention and thought they were on pause yesterday. They went to sleep with empty hearts (::mouse looks ashamed::) and their Tenshi Power down (I don't know at what level, though--their maximum was 90). This morning I woke up shortly after they did and saw them having their peeved look, like after you call them back from behind the door. I tried pushing different buttons, but all that happened was a sort of sliding-door effect (not the "time tunnel effect" others have spoken of), then the word, "Thanks!"appeared on the screen. It seems that will remain on the screen until I decide to reset it or turn it off. I don't know whether to feel guilty or relieved...I think I feel some of both. Bye-bye, you two! Have fun making snow, moving stars around, and helping new little souls get acclimated to heaven!

Well...I still have Pilgrim, my little desktop Tama to take care of, and also my four GameBoy Tamas. :-)

Sunday, December 7, 1997: Teddy, my Komputer Koala (GigaPet), was born last night at 7:28pm. He's really cute! But his health has been going down this evening, plus he has the shivers! Eep! I have consulted every place on the Web I can think of. I may've compounded the problem via conflicting information: 1 bath a day vs. more; only 1 trip a day to the vet's vs. more; and finally:conflicting information from Tiger Electronics themselves. In the instruction folder that came with my Komputer Koala, it says, "Your koala need eucalyptus leaves to grow, and milk to stay happy." (I take it that means that eucalyptus leaves are healthy food and milk is a snack) However, on their GigaWorld site, they say, "His healthy food is milk and his treats are leaves. Remember not to give Komputer-Koala too many treats or he will get sick." ::sigh:: I hope I can get Teddy healthy again...I hope it's not too late :-(    [edit Sept. 13, 2004] See this entry about which food is which.

Monday, December 8, 1997: Armed with specific instructions from Donna Weinstein, a member of the tamagotchi-l mailing list and a person who has very thorough knowledge of raising GigaPets and other virtual pets, I am putting Teddy on a regimen that should help him! I feel less helpless now and more able to take care of my little cutie.

[added Sept. 13, 2004, to aid others quickly. This is the regimen mentioned above.] This is a post made by Donna Weinstein to the alt.toys.virtual-pets Usenet newsgroup. This information can also be found by searching the archives at Google Groups (formerly known as DejaNews). Here is Donna's post:

Subject: Re: GigaPet Digital Doggie Health Problem

Gigapets' health is a tricky thing--dependent on not-so-obvious factors. A few tips I've found will improve the health score:

Give the pet one bath a day--I find it's easier to remember to do it first thing in the morning.

Never use the discipline button! Keep the discipline level up by teaching the pet one trick per day. Only give a snack when the pet learns the trick--too many snacks are bad for the health.

Every time the pet does the trick scores 10 on the discipline meter. Try to keep discipline at 100 or close to 100 without going "over." For example, don't make the pet do the trick if discipline is at 95. One trick if it's at 90 or 85, two tricks if it's at 80, etc.

Similarly try to keep the hunger meter as close to 100 as possible without overfeeding. One nourishing meal=20 points. So don't feed the pet if the hunger meter is above 80. Only feed it once if it's between 61 and 80--feed it twice if it's at 60, etc.

Take the pet to the vet only once a day, and only if the health meter is below 100. Taking it to the vet any more than that can actually bring the health down.

Hope this helps--
Donna

Although the above post is about the Digital Doggie, it applies to all GigaPets. I followed these instructions for my Komputer Koala with great success. [end edit Sept. 13, 2004]

Tuesday, December 9, 1997: Teddy is doing a little better today--his health level is up slightly. Perhaps he will make gradual improvement (I hope!). I don't know why he still is shivering and looking down at the ground. I disciplined him when he was young...I wonder if that's it. :-(

Thursday, December 11, 1997: Yay! Teddy is doing much better! The shivering stopped when his health level reached and then exceeded 50! He's not only growing healthier little by little each day: he's also growing *bigger*! His appearance has changed so that he looks bigger and chunkier :-)

Sunday, December 14, 1997: Today Pilgrim, my desktop Tama, went home to Planet Tamagotchi ::sniffle:: He *did* send me a very nice postcard, though! I'll miss you, sweetie! Bye-bye!

On a cheerier note, Teddy, my GigaPet koala, is doing exceedingly well! This is all due to strictly following the instructions that Donna Weinstein gave me! If it had not been for her, Teddy would not have made it to healthy adulthood!

Friday, December 19, 1997: Teddy has been involved in the holiday experience! On Wednesday we wrapped presents and listened to a couple of the "Winter Solstice" albums (various artists from Windham Hill) and "A Different Shore" by Nightnoise.

Yesterday he went along while I finished my Xmas shopping! He got to peek out at K*B Toy Works, a wonderful housewares store called Lechters, and Hallmark! I actually took care of him while sitting down in Jersey Mike's (submarine sandwich shop) and later at Barnes & Noble bookstore. Eventually I ended up playing the climbing game with him in the taxi, in the almost-darkness! (he was definitely unhappy, so I needed to take care of him *then*) So I guess, with the peripheral vision all virtual pets have (see entry for July 31, Part 1), he got to see Xmas lights along the way home!

5pm: More wrapping of presents this afternoon (!), this time to the music of Mason Williams, on his CD "A Gift of Song" and a grocery-store buy that turned out to be surprisingly pretty, called "Magnificent Bells, Organs and Chimes".

Sunday, December 21, 1997: Well, I thought it might be nice to get a little extra sleep this morning. I looked at the instructions for my GigaPet koala, but there was nothing in them about pausing my GigaPet. I looked at the instructions for Salem (Sabrina's cat). It said to hit the left, right, and enter buttons all at the same time. I did this with Teddy. All that I succeeded in doing was to awaken him 15 minutes early. ::sigh:: This is one disadvantage that GigaPets and Nano pets have, compared to Tamagotchi: Tams awaken at 9am (mostly...sometimes as late as 11am!), rather than an early 7am!

Friday, December 26, 1997: Teddy is still with us! He got to see "The Muppet Christmas Carol" on Dec. 23d; "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" on Dec. 24th; lots of presents being opened on Dec. 25th! And he's gotten to watch me play a lot of "Monster Rancher" (I don't know yet if I will put up a Monster Rancher page......).
