St. Swithin's Day

July 15, 1986, 5am

O Thou Who art so fiery in my heart

Come Thou again in all Thy majesty

And see what Thou hast sundered, broke apart

All glory and renewal from within

The chasms that divide us all

Are only tiny cracks and faults

But in the heat of change and growth

It is so hard to see the truth

O why cannot we sit and love

And talk of butterflies and dreams

Instead of fighting, hiding Truth

Denying all that we've been given?

O Love, of all that is my life,

O Everlasting Love of all,

We've lost our way so dreadfully

And lost the fire that You once gave.

Come Thou again and light the night

With fireworks of holy joy

And give us back our ancient rights

To show all love and tenderness

Thou art the quiet candle lit

By bedside of a sleeping child

Thou art the warmth of cozy flame

On kitchen hearthstone, country lane

Thou art the wild and free desire

Of pagan bonfire long ago

Thou art volcanoes, molten rock

That sweeps before it all that grows

In stagnant swamp and fetid waste

When love could have its way with us

O come again and clear a path

For all the joy that should be ours

O Holy One, O Joy of Night,

O Heavenly One, sweet flame so bright

Thou canst not die nor long be hidden

Do come Thou now, for Thou art bidden!
