Trick 1, episode 8

Someone knocks on Yamada's door late at night.

Something appears and scares Yamada and she faints.

Her landlady wants her to enter some kind of contest to win her a trip. (Yamada tends to do chores, etc. for the landlady since she's usually short of money for the rent.)

Ueda is the judge. It's not just magicial tricks, though. It's short of a variety show-type of thing.

Yamada's trick breaks.

He charges nothing for his readings, but charges people a lot for the things he says they need to get because of his readings.

They talk to some old man that says the clairvoyant is a fraud.

Yamada explains to Ueda how some frauds get the information by doing a “cold reading” of the person; basically, asking them leading questions which helps them pin down possibilities and makes it appear that they know a lot more than they really do.

He describes a variety of things that are in her room. He even does a full sketch of where everything is in her room and then goes there to verify that he's correct.

She explains something called “hot reading” where a supposed psychic investigates the person before talking to them and makes it appear they know lots about the person through psychic means. Yamada thinks the guy came to her apartment and took photos of it so he could do his sketch.

She thinks the fake magician has returned to her apartment. At the same time her mother has a dream about her. It wasn't him, though; it was just the landlady and a helper.

They figure out how the fake magician found out about the arrangement of her apartment.

Ueda makes an appointment with the fake magician. A delivery man shows up and he slugs him and they tie him up so he can't report the layout of the apartment to the fake magician.

The guy seems to be able to describe and sketch Ueda's apartment correctly anyhow.

They go back to the guy once Yamada thinks she's figured out how he knows the arrangement of the apartments.

His partner was telling him what she saw. Her broach was the microphone and he had a receiver in his ear.

The police come to arrest the fake magician.
