Bar Flower

This is the story of a young woman, Lea Jacobson, that goes to Tokyo to be a teacher. She's bi-lingual and fitted for the job, but the book goes into how it's very difficult to manage to adapt to the different society that is Japan, and she has some difficulties with that.

She also has had some difficulties in the past, including an eating disorder and also cutting. After losing her teaching job she ends up working in a bar as a hostess and, for the majority of the book, we see how the hostesses work, how they relate to their customer, and how working conditions can vary quite a bit from one bar to another.

She also develops a major problem with alcoholism and we see how this affects her personal life.

It's a very interesting book from a number of perspectives.
