Japan Expansion and American Policies - 1916

Why the U.S. might start a war with Japan. He adds that the second and third events are basically impossible.

Why Japan might start a war.

A war could not be financed by Japan alone, but there are ways she could raise the money. He was quite accurate about possibility #2. He goes on to say that Japan would not be able to raise the money by a loan from any of the European powers.

Another possibility is for the Japanese to seize the West Coast.

The Japanese might overwhelm regular military forces, but guerilla warfare could prove to be a major problem for them.

Here he hits exactly what happened 25 years later. He goes on to say that, if Japan would win a war, it would still have a hard time hanging on to the Philippines due to guerilla warfare against them. He also talks about how Japan's economic trade with the U.S. would end, and this would be a burden for Japan.

He points out that any war would not be limited to Japan and the U.S., but would include other countries.
