Hong Kong 1941

The movie is about the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in WWII. Fay lives with his aunt and hostile uncle. He makes a friend of Kong, a local thug. Fay wants to go to Australia or the U.S. Keung wants to stay because he has a thing for Anna, the daughter of a rice importer.

I'll only do a few scans and then a section on what I think of the movie.

Fei.

Westerners are evacuating Hong Kong before the Japanese get there. Fei's trying to sneak a ride to Australia on the boat.

The second guy from the left is Keung , the thug.

This is Anna/Nam, her older form doing the narration. Her father ran a rice facility and he's really nasty, wanting to marry her off to someone and cheating his workers.

32 minutes into the film the Japanese attack just as the girl and the two guys plan to leave for Australia. Two of them don't make the last boat and Fei stays.

There's a scene where a girl's hair is being cut and people are putting dirt on her, presumably so the Japanese soldiers will not try to rape her. Anna ends up getting raped by a regular policeman.

The Japanese make their appearance 47 minutes into the film.

The Japanese are making a propaganda film to make it look like they are beneficent rulers when they were killing and starving people. This type of thing really happened.

Later we see some Chinese that are taking advantage and have turned collaborator and are willing to torture and injure other Chinese.

Fei is attracted to Anna but he won't make any moves since his friend, Keung, is in love with her. He has to hurt Keung severely by sticking a firecracker in his ear and setting it off but if he hadn't done that Keung would have been killed. Fei manages to kill a traitor and rescue Keung.

Things get worse when one of the high-ranking Japanese officers wants Anna for himself. There's more fights, more death and not all three of the main characters make it out alive.

This is a romantic film, basically, with some emphasis on the Japanese cruelty but the romance is the main focus of the film.
