Battle of Los Angeles: Fighting off an Alien Craft book review

This book has two major themes. First, during World War II, an alien craft flew over Los Angeles. There were numerous spotlights that seem to be focused on it and the military defenses fired thousands of shells into the air to attack what they thought they saw.

This was at a time when the West Coast was subject to a possible Japanese invasion. One Japanese sub actually shelled an oil refinery on the California coast (without any major damage). The anti-Japanese sentiment was at a fever pitch which would end up with some 120,000 Japanese Americans required to leave the Weat Coast and end up in internment camps inland.

There were five deaths due to whatever happened and the shrapnel from the shells damaged windows. The deaths were due to heart attacks and a car crash.

The book notes that radar did track an object.(If radar picks up an object then I think it generally means there was something there for it to pick up.) The government said it was a weather balloon (the same excuse they used for the Roswell crash.) So, if you fire anti-aircraft guns at a slow-moving weather balloon shouldn't it have been blown up either by direct fire or by the shrapnel from the shells?)

The book notes that there were many contradictory reports ranging from object to numerous Japanese aircraft. The book also talks about Mount Shasta and UFOs and discusses the possibility that there is an underwater UFO base near Catalina Island.

The underwater UFO base portion of the book is, at least to me, pretty much pure speculation. If there was a real possibility of such a thing then why hasn't anyone that has the money to pull it off gotten a boat and a deep submersible remote-control vehicle to check things out?

The book also has photos.

I've read a good bit about this event and I think this book does a very good job of covering what happened and the confusion over just what took place.
