Tule Lake 1942 Yearbook

The original images I got from an entry by Mark Frauenfelder at Boing-Boing. The entry is here. I have taken the original images and cropped them a little, and I'm incredibly grateful for his having put them up.

The cover of the yearbook looks pretty much like the cover of any yearbook from the time.

The Ex Libris page has some decent artwork on it.

Then there's a map showing where Tule Lake is. Tule Lake was, of course, one of the internment centers for persons of Japanese ancestry during World War II. It was also the camp than ended up holding most of the internees that were the “No-No's,” and various troublemakers, along with regular internees. Thus, the camp had a number of problems and a lot of tension.

Another page of good artwork.

A page that shows that we are not dealing with an average school, since school buildings generally don't have a barn-type of appearance.

The Table of Contents, showing more buildings.

A good poem.

A view of the camp from outside. Here we really get to appreciate just how different this area is form the normal school area. You can see the barbed wire surrounding the area, along with one of the guard towers. The various barrack-type buildings are also shown. This is more prison than normal high school.

A farewell message to the graduates.

The principal.

Congratulations to the senior class.

Administrative snapshots.

Administrative staff, all white, of course. Although the students were persons of Japanese ancestry, there is no the leader of the school would have reflected their racial makeup.

The faculty is a little over 60% white, the rest PJAs (Persons of Japanese Ancestry.) That's not a bad ratio, actually, especially for the times.

The office staff.

The school opened on September 14, 1942. February 2, 1944 saw the opening of a new school building.

Notice, again, the barbed wire fencing.

The senior cabinet.
