Munda Trail: Turning the Tide Against Japan in the South Pacific (1989)

This book deals with various battles in the Solomon Islands and how American forces began to inflict defeats upon the Japanese army. It centers mostly on the battle for the island of New Georgia, and goes into the various tactics of both sides, information gathering, the building of aircraft runways, etc. It goes into considerable detail on the fighting and is very interesting and complete in that respect, although if you are not into the details of the battles then the book might prove somewhat weighty. He notes that the Guadalcanal campaign was the turning point for land areas in the Japanese advances; from that point on, the military of Japan went into reverse. The Japanese lost some 600 planes and pilots and other personnel in the battle, a loss that Japan could not easily replace.

The author talks about a major mistake the Japanese military made. He also talks about how the Japanese overran some American hospitals and killed the soldiers that were in them.
