The “forgotten” battle of the Pacific War quite possibly wasn't needed at all (March, 1992)

This article is about the battle for Peleliu.

The article starts by saying that Peleliu was one of the Marine's hardest fought battles in the entire war. The article is covering a book that had been issued, called Peleliu: Tragic Triumph: The Untold Story of the Pacific War's Forgotten Battle.

The author of the book says that Peleliu should never have been invaded, and the leadership at the top did not prepare the troops adequately. 1,121 Marines were killed, 5142 wounded, and 73 missing. The author of the book says that Peleliu should have been bypassed as were many other islands in the push towards Japan.

Both the reasons given for taking the island, and the tactics used to take it, were flawed, the author says.
