Japan Under the Shoguns 1185-1868

Technically, this is a “juvenile” level book, but, for all practical purposes, it an be read and enjoyed by both “juvenile” and adult readers. There is a tremendous amount of information in this book, and the book spends a good bit of time on Japanese culture in addition to its history.

The book covers the time before the shoguns rose to power, then examines the history of shogun rule through the civil war and the Tokugawa Shogunate, then moves on to the lives of the samurai, how Japan related to the outside workd, and chapters on everyday life in Japan, the samurai-farmer-craftsman-merchant societal ranks, and the Meiji restoration.

The book also includes a lot of beautiful photos, a timeline, a glossary, and a list of other resources.
