Suicide for Glory

The episode starts off by talking about Japan as Americans saw it before the war.

Then it talks about religious differences between the two countries.

Then it talks about Hirohito as a warrior-god.

American task forces bear down on Okinawa.

Okinawa took 83 days to conquer.

Virtually all Japanese are required to take part in the war effort.

Then it starts talking about the kamikaze.

350 kamikaze take off from Kyushu bound for Okinawa.

U.S. planes manage to shoot down many of the kamikaze, and anti-aircraft fire takes many more, but some still make their way through and crash into U.S. ships.

Many kamikaze miss the ships they are aiming for.

The kamikaze take a frightful toll in ships and men.

The attacks even occur at night.

The film shows how one ship tries to put the fires out on another ship.

FDR's funeral procession. Meanwhile, at Okinawa, thirty ships are sunk and over two hundred damaged by the kamikaze. More than 3,500 kamikaze planes are destroyed. (Working that out in math, that means it took over 15 planes to either sink or damage a ship on the average.)
