Hiroshima

This is a novella by Lawrence Yep, who has done some very good young adult books on Asian themes.

The author writes briefly about the schoolchildren being made to engage in war-related activities like pulling down homes to make fire breaks. The book describes the dropping of the bomb and its effects, and then talks about the Hiroshima maidens, 25 Japanese women who were badly scarred by the bomb and went to the U.S. for surgery. They were the only ones who did, though, since there was a controversy in Japan over their going to the U.S., some people saying the money should have been spent on Hiroshima itself.

There is a chapter on Hiroshima Park. The author admits that statistics on actual deaths are open to disagreement as to the exact numbers involved. Other sources are added at the end of the book.
