Asian-Americans in the Old West

This is a very good book for young readers about Asian immigration to the U.S.

The book starts off discussing Chinese immigration, and how the Chinese were instrumental in helping to build railroads, and in establishing some small businesses. It then goes into how anti-Chinese feeling grew until it resulted in riots and anti-Chinese legislation, which led to banning of Chinese immigrants.

U.S. businesses had a shortage of workers, though, so this time it was the Japanese who were encouraged to settle in the U.S. The Japanese established a lot of farms and became extremely successful farmers.

Their success, just like the success of the Chinese, led to anti-Japanese feeling and anti-Japanese legislation and eventually banning Japanese settlement.

The book has both color and black-and-white illustrations. It's a very interesting book.
