One day before the start of the invasion. There are over 1400 ships in the Allied attack fleet.

The day of the invasion.

The landing troops are told that 80% of them will be killed or wounded before the end of the day, despite the intense bombardment of the island.

Over 100,000 Japanese soldiers were waiting. Their aim was to kill ten Americans for each Japanese lost.

The Americans capture two airfields by nightfall, the Japanese offering no resistance on the beaches. They are all inland and/or underground.

Americans had taken this much area before encountering Japanese resistance.

Kamikaze take off to attack the U.S. ships. This involved over 350 planes.

April 7. The Yamato and some other ships are sent to attack the U.S. ships at Okanawa, but they never make it.

In under two years, the Yamato is sunk and the support ships eviscerated.

The Japanese launched a counter-attack in the south, but managed only to lose around 7000 men dead.

It talks about the battle for Sugar Loaf Hill.

At one of the underground locations oil was poured into the holes and then flamethrowers used to burn up the Japanese defenders.

Now this is very interesting. One Japanese soldier charged an American who killed him. The Japanese soldier had a backpack on that contained pictures of atrocities committed in Nanking.

Another guy who was there says he saw lines of civilians coming towards the American lines, and the Japanese troops would open fire on them and mow them down.

Over 12,000 Americans were killed or missing, and over 38,000 wounded.

Six weeks later, Hiroshima and Nagaski were hit with atomic bombs and the war ended.
