Once the Japanese were unable to keep their air superiority, they were in trouble. American planes could then attack Japanese shipping almost with impunity. American submarines also took a major toll of the Japanese ships. Near the end of the war virtually all shipping to and from Japan had been brought to a halt or made extremely dangerous to undertake.
