Navy Training Film: The Battle of Midway

This film is the first part,covering the build-up to the actual battle.

They note it was one of the most decisive battles of naval history.

The Japanese approached in widely separated groups.

At the same time they attacked the Aleutian Islands.

Then it talks about the Doolittle Raid (with what is so obviously a white guy trying to imitate the stereotypical Japanese method of speech.)

Japanese plans of places to attack.

The results of the battle of Coral Sea forced the Japanese to drop some of their targets.

Japan figured they had better attack quick because they knew that the industrial strength of America could majorly hurt their plans.

The Japanese thought they could draw out the American fleet and destroy them.

The Japanese didn't think they would have to take on any American carriers.

The narrator points out that the Japanese forces were too spread out and the Main Force could not really support the others unless the others fell back to their position.

The American estimates of Japanese strength were only partially accurate.

Task Force 8 was to defend the Aleutians and Alaska. It did not have as many planes or ships as were really needed.

The two task forces met each other.

They were not supposed to get into a fight where the Japanese would have superior forces.
