Mac Arthur's Greatest Secret

Military Quarterly: Autumn 2002, Volume 15 #1

In New Guinea the Japanese were retreating, leaving lots of things behind. Amongst those items were Japanese code books for the 20th Infantry Division. The books had been put into a trunk and then dumped in the water, but the trunk was recovered and the books, although water damaged, could still be used. The codes were broken and they helped the U.S. in its attacks on Japanese bases and ships.
