Military History Quarterly, Autumn 1991, volume 4 #1.

At 11 A.M. the announcement was made to the Japanese that their country was now at war with the United States. Military songs were played. The article describes what Hirohito did on that day.

The Japanese accused the United States of trying to dominate the Orient and they were angry over U.S. attempts to aid China in their fight against the Japanese invaders. Tojo made a speech and even more songs were played.

Public opinion was tightly controlled, and labor leaders, communists and military resisters were put into prison. The media was strongly censored and rationing was established. For weeks all the news was good for the Japanese.
