MacArthur Returns to the Philippines

Another in the Crusade in the Pacific series.

March, 1935. FDR approves the new constitution of the Philippine Commonwealth.

The Japanese later invaded and took over the Philippines.

MacArthur (again.)

At first, there was some question about which should be invaded first; the Philippines, or Formosa and the China coast.

Carrier attacks continue throughout the Philippines.

A wide variety of targets was attacked. We see planes attack locomotives, storage tanks, buildings, and other things.

A convoy of some 170,000 U.S. soldiers makes it way towards Leyte.

October 20th.

MacArthur walks again on Philippine soil.

Japanese fleets plan to attack on two fronts. Halsey's carriers stage an air attack on the Japanese Central Fleet.

The U.S. attack lasted some five hours.

An enemy decoy force causes Halsey then to take his carriers North.

The Central Force, which had turned around, turns around again and heads back to attack.

PT boats first engaged the Southern Force, then U.S. battleships opened fire.
The Southern Force is “overwhelmingly defeated” and retreats.

The decoy fleet is attacked, and the Japanese lose four carriers.

The results of the battle. The Central Force, even though it was doing well in sinking U.S. ships, turned around for some reason and left.

Japanese troops are moved from Luzon down to Leyte.

Kamikaze attacks start.

The Luzon area is attacked. Filipinos welcome the Americans.

Filipinos who had been fighting a guerrilla war against the Japanese join forces with American troops and are given clothing and weapons.

Airfields near Manila are attacked.

The capital city of Manila is attacked by U.S. forces.

Various prison camps are liberated.

A paratroop attack is made on the island of Corregidor.

An amphibious force lands on the southern shore of the island at the same time. The fight continued for around two weeks.

MacArthur arrives after the island is taken for the ceremony of raising the U.S. flag.
