Utah's First Century!Sagebrush and Pioneer to a Treasure House in the Mountains by George M. Gadsby; Newcomen Society in North America, 1951

Utah has produced her share of creative artists who have earned national recognition. A list of them would include the names of Maude Adams of Peter Pan fame ; Hazel Dawn, The Pink Lady ; Otto Hauerbach and LeRoy Robertson, composers; Emma Lucy Gates Bowen and Margaret Romaine, grand opera; Cyrus E. Dallin, Mahonri Young, and Avard Fairbanks, sculptors; and Grant Johannesen, pianist.

One of the greatest of these, Maude Adams, paid this tribute to the people of her home State:

"Apart from the life in the theatre, there are two cities that hold very tender memories. One, in a lovely valley protected by friendly mountains, is always 'home.' The people of the valley have gentle manners, as if their spirits moved with dignity. Their forebears suffered great hardness in the search for their haven, but those who survived found peace and plenty in the beautiful valley of Salt Lake. And their children have inherited the gentleness that comes from having endured hardness."
