Was Maude Adams Engaged?

Just as in present-day tabloids, rumors about famous people were in the regular newspapers of the time. Maude Adams was linked to two different men; one not surprising, that being Charles Frohman. The second was someone named Richard Harding Davis.

The Daily Advocate (Ohio), November 22, 1892

The Evening News (Nebraska), June 17, 1895

The Fort Wayne News (Ind.), June 22, 1895

The Indiana Democrat, July 25, 1895

The first article notes both she and Frohman are denying that they intended to get married. It's not surprising, of course, that such rumors would be present about the two of them.

The surprise is this Richard Harding Davis, who was referred to in various articles. The three articles are from three different newspapers, although it's always possible the papers were picking up the story from other papers.
