=====A History of the Theatre in America from Its Beginnings to the Present Time Vol. 2 by Arthur Hornblow; J.B. Lippincott Company, 1919=====

Dion Boucicault was born in Dublin about 1822, the family being of French descent. He was educated as a civil engineer, but, finding that vocation little to his taste, he began to dabble in playwriting. His first piece, "A Lover by Proxy," was refused by the management of Covent Garden, but his next attempt, "London Assurance," produced May 4, 1841, proved a great success and established Boucicault's reputation as a dramatist to be reckoned with. Other plays written at this period were "The Irish Heiress," "Alma Mater," "Woman," "Old Heads and Young Hearts," "A School for Scheming," "Confidence," "The Knight of Arva," "The Broken Vow," "The Queen of Spades," and "The Vampire."

In America, he acted in several of his own plays. In "Smike," he appeared as Mantalini, and in "The Octoroon" he played the Indian Wah-no-Tee. In "The Shaughraun" he was seen as Conn. His greatest hit was as the romantic peasant Myles-na-Coppaleen in "The Colleen Bawn." But it was as a dramatist that he attracted most attention. He wrote in all over 400 plays and adaptations, some of them being: "Love in a Maze,""The Dublin Boy,""Grimaldi," "Used Up,""The Willow Copse,""Janet Pride," "How She Loved Him,""The Fox Hunt,""The Old Guard,""Arrah na Pogue,""Rip Van Winkle,""The Long Strike,""Louis XI,""The Flying Scud,""Foul Play,""The Corsican Brothers," "The Streets of New York,""Omoo,""To Parents and Guardians,"Presumptive Evidence,""The Cherry Tree Inn,"After Dark,""Hunted Down," "A Dark Night's Work,""Jezabel,""Led Astray," "Mora,""Mimi,""Belle Lamar,""The Man of Honor,""Rescued,""A Bridal Tour,""The Jilt," Robert Emmet,""Ninety Nine."
