Something About Mary Magdalene

The film starts out noting that some people believe she played a major role in the birth of Christianity. It also notes some believe she was Jesus' secret wife and mother of his child. Then it goes into what the Gospels say about Jesus and Mary. It notes Jesus focused his efforts on the poor, the outcast and on women.

The Bible notes that Mary Magdalene was basically a patron of Jesus. She was at the crucifixion and went to his tomb to anoint his body. This is pointed out in the Gospels. The film points out that Mary Magdalene has been pivotal in Jesus' resurrection as shown through centuries of artworks.

The tradition of Easter eggs is explained. The Nag Hammadi scrolls are then discussed. The Gnostic gospels have Mary Magdalene playing an important role while Jesus was still alive. She preaches to the Apostles and shares private messages from Jesus.

It discusses the Gospel of Mary and Peter's opposition to her. He attacks her because she is a woman. It talks about how many gospels were left out of the Bible on purpose. It moves on tot discuss the belief that Mary Magdalene ended up in France. One place has what they believe to be her skull.

There is also a legend that she went to Turkey and lived out the rest of her life there. Pope Gregory is the one responsible for making Mary Magdalene being accused of being a prostitute. This was done in the 6h century This was used to attack the idea of her being a disciple.

The video then goes on to interviews. Dr. Marven Meyer, Ramon Jusino and Reverend Esther De Boer are the three interviewed. Meyer says that in the early Church there was wide diversity. Politican interests played a major role in determining what the beliefs of the Church would be accepted and which ones (such as the Gnostic Gospels) would be left out and attacked.

Ramon Jusino: He says the Gospel of John has been reworked two or three times. Initially the Beloved Disciple was originally Mary Magdalene but she was altered so her identity would be unknown in order to satisfy the 'official' church dogma. He says that a follower of Mary Magdalene must also be a follower of Jesus.

Reverend Esther De Boer: She talks about the 'Beloved Disciple.' If that was Mary Magdalene it does not mean necessarily that they had an erotic relationship. She says turning Mary Magdalene being a prostitute (which there is no actual evidence for in the Bible) has had a bad effect up to the present day. (This was another put-down of women's sexuality. By doing that they down-played her actual importance.)
