Annie Oakley in the Ghost Town Secret

Annie Oakley is 17, with a ten-year-old brother Tagg. Her uncle is the sheriff and has been shot, but is healing. Her mother was dead; her father died as a soldier, she went to live with her uncle.

Annie gets a letter saying someone wants to see her; he served under her father and did something wrong in relation to him

Two of the crooks plan to spring the third from jail. They try to kill the sheriff, but Annie is able to stop them.

Tagg talks about the possible gold-mine, and the crook that was caught listens to him. The crook manages to escape.

Annie finds out that the place they were heading for now consists of flooded-out mines, and is a ghost town.

The crooks manage to reunite and head towards Paradise Creek, the same place Annie and Tagg are going.

(Why is it that so many movies and stories have kids like Tagg who seem totally clueless about anything, paying no attention to potential dangers and not having seemed to learn anything about things to watch out for despite growing up in an area where survival was anything but guaranteed? )

Even Annie herself seems to be a little overly-optimistic about things, and a little too willing to downplay potential dangers.

The two older outlaws think they have killed the younger one, but he is saved by Annie and Tagg. Annie and Tagg help him and he leaves. Later, the two youngsters find the ghost town.

Akers, the man who wrote for Annie to visit him, gives her a medal of honor her father had won and Akers had stolen from him.

The story then becomes complex as Akers explains about Bannon, the youngest of the outlaws. Things get worse when Tagg goes off on his own (as usual, without any thought of caution in his head) and nearly gets himself and Annie killed.

In the end everything is cleared up, the right crooks are brought to justice, and a father/son reunion is held.

It's a fairly decent book.
