The book starts off exploring the origin of the people who went to America and set up the Plymouth Colony. It was a religious issue, where some people did not accept the Church of England and wanted to worship in their own way. They could not legally leave England, but somehow they managed to end up in Holland anyhow.
After a while they decided to leave there since a war between Holland and Spain was brewing, and so they decided to form a colony in the Americas. There's an interesting section about how there was supposed to be a two-boat expedition, but it ended up a one-boat one instead.
Then in goes into what happened they landed and how the colony almost didn't survive.
