Companions of the Night

This is another really good book by Vivian Vande Velde, but, unlike most of her other books, this one is very serious and very dark.

Kerry is a 16-year-old girl who becomes one of the “wrong people in the wrong place at the wrong time” type of individuals. She encounters what appears to be an individual being tortured and threatened with death. She tries to help the person out, but unfortunately she doesn't know all the facts.

She ends up working with a vampire. Her father and brother are kidnapped, and she works with Ethan, the vampire, to free her father and brother. However, Ethan has his own agenda, including revenge for a vampire killed and beheaded by the kidnapper who has now assumed that Kerry is, herself, one of the undead.

It's a very well done book where Kerry is never sure whether what Ethan is saying is truth or a lie. She's not sure if she, herself, is going to end up as the victim of a vampire, but she also knows that Ethan is the best hope she has of recovering her father and brother.

She goes through quite a bit in a short time, and the description of her adventure is well-done and constantly interesting. The two main characters, as well as the villain, are very fleshed-out individuals with personalities of their own.

It's amazing how many books she writes, and that the books continually remain entertaining and well worth reading.
