Dare, Truth or Promise

This is a wonderful young adult story about two girls who are lesbians. Both still go to high school, and both work part-time at a burger joint. Louie is into acting, and Willa into fencing.

Louie is very socially conscious, good at comedy and at using that to make her point. Willa has a past with a girl named Cathy, and that relationship did not end well at all. Cathy came from a fundamentalist family and they, of course, thought any girl-girl relationship was evil and utterly wrong.

Louie and Willa fall in love. Louie's mother, though, is very much against the affair and does everything she can to stop it. Things go utterly downhill after she catches the two girls resting on Louie's bed.

Cathy considers suicide, and her brother can only think about how evil her behavior has been. Louie misses Willa terribly, and tries to date a guy but that doesn't work out. She even talks to a priest who tells her the church is against homosexuality but he, himself, considers basically that true love trumps church dogma.

Things continue to go downhill and becomes questionable whether Louie is badly injured in a car crash which is the event that tips everything else to a resolution.

This is a really good book. It shows the opposition to lesbian relationships, even if those relationships are full of love and understanding, and it also shows how far some people who hate lesbians will go to cause them trouble and pain.
