Dragon's Bait

This is another of Vivian Velde's books and, as with almost all of her books, is very good.

This is not one of her humorous books, though. Alys is the leading character, a young girl who is accused of witchcraft by someone who wants to take over her father's property. The book does a good job of showing how easily it was to become accused of being a witch, and how ludicrous the “legal proceedings” were that would lead to conviction and execution.

In this case, Alys is not burned at the stake; instead, she's tied to a stake and left out as bait for a dragon that's been in the area.

What those who were planning her death overlooked was the possibility that the dragon might be much more than it seems, and that, rather than eating the girl, it might take an interest in helping the girl obtain revenge.

That's what the rest of the book is about. How the dragon (which can change into a human male) helps Alys obtain her revenge against those who accused her and the one who tried her. It also shows that revenge sometimes takes a life of its own, and might not actually be the best thing to become involved in.

The characters are done well, and the story is good. I also like the ending of the story. Definitely worth reading.
