The 1937 text has 25 chapters and 217 pages.

The revised 1970 text has 20 chapters and 179 regular pages, plus 3 pages of ads. There is the illustration opposite the title page, as usual, and illustrations in chapters 1, 5, 13 and17.

This is another of the series that was very heavily revised, so much so that I will simply do a synopsis of each separately.

Original 1937 Text

Chapter 1

The girls are going to the opening of a new park. They encounter a dog, Togo. It digs up a flower bed and people get mad at Nancy, thinking it's her dog. Mrs. Owen is supposed to give a speech, but Togo takes her purse and runs away.

Chapter 2

Ned shows up. Workmen look for the purse in the lake. Nancy dries out the women's notes with a heater. Owen gives her speech. Nancy says she and the girls are going to Sea Cliff. The woman says Nancy looks like a statue she's seen there.

Chapter 3

Togo causes more problems. Nancy gets home and let's Togo in. The girls get on a train and Togo shows up. There's a woman with a cloak with money in it. Some guy sees the woman and tries to hit on her.

Chapter 4

Some rich woman claims Togo is her daughter's dog but it's not. The girls get to Sea Cliff.

Chapter 5

The woman from the train has a suitcase that ends up in Nancy's room. The woman is not registered at the hotel. The girls get to use a car. Nancy is in the woods and sees the guy from the train talking to the woman.

Chapter 6

Nancy thinks he's plotting to cheat the woman out of her money. Mr. Drew has gone on business. The girls rent a rowboat and see a swimmer in trouble.

Chapter 7

The girls rescue the guy whose name is Jack. They meet his mother at lunch the next day. He says he's seen the statue. Nancy goes to the estate and it's abandoned. There are actually three statues, only one of which looks like Nancy. An Italian guy shows up and says he wants to wreck the place and thinks Nancy owns it. His monkey escapes.

Chapter 8

The guy leaves without the monkey. Nancy goes back to get the monkey. The suitacase has actress clothing in it.

Chapter 9

Nancy returns the monkey. The girls go to a carnival with Jack. Mr. Drew has arrived and his briefcase is stolen.

Chapter 10

Nancy finds a button from the thief's coat. Nancy dresses up as a chambermaid to get in the thief's room.

Chapter 11

Mr. Drew is worried that his client could end up being kidnapped. The girls go ocean fishing with Jack. A plane lands in the water and catches fire. The pilot is unconscious. The girls and Jack go to recover them.

Chapter 12

Both men are recovered. The pilot had been drugged. The passenger is Mr. Drew's client he was worried about.

Chapter 13

Mr. Drew tells Owen, his client, that the drugging of the pilot was an attempt to kill him. The girls take Togo for a walk and eavesdrop on Mitza, the man from the train, and someone who is a crook.

Chapter 14

Mitza beats Togo with a stick.

Chapter 15

Mr. Drew finds out the pilot was drugged. Owen's wife is supposed to be dead, but it's possible that she's not.

Chapter 16

The girls go to a dinner and a dance. Jack and Nancy go to the old estate. Nancy sees a light. Jack checks it out but finds nothing. A telegram comes and says Mr. Owen's wife is actually alive. The girls go shopping. Nancy gets a letter from the woman on the train.

Chapter 17

Mrs. Owens, the woman from the park, arrives. The girls go to the old estate again. The woman from the train arrives.

Chapter 18

She goes into the broken-down house. Mitza arrives. Nancy fakes the statue talking. He runs, men chase him. Nancy finds Mitza had been carrying fake money.

Chapter 19

A guy arrives and Nancy knows him. He has heart trouble and has a heart attack. The girls take him to the doctor. The buy with the monkey hits Nancy's car.

Chapter 20

Nancy gets the car fixed and returns to the old estate. The Italian guy is stealing the statue along with another crook.

Chapter 21

Mitza shows up. The woman from the train is there.

Chapter 22

Nancy shows the fake money to the woman from the train. She's nasty to Nancy. The guy grabs Nancy and she's tied up.

Chapter 23

The old woman is the actual daughter of the man who owned the estate. Mitza is her son. She's led a life of crime and doesn't want him to follow in her footsteps.

Chapter 24

Mitza decides to become honest. The woman faints in the house. The house starts to collapse into the sea.

Chapter 25

George, Bess and Mr. Drew arrive. The house is, for the moment, floating in the sea. Mr. Drew contacts the coast guard. They fire a missile of some kind into the house that has a grappling line attached and they haul the house in, rescuing the woman and Nancy. The woman later dies.

As you can see, it's sort of a story that's all over the place with too many things going on and almost nothing actually resolved.

1970 Revised Text version

Chapter 1

Hannah has taken care of Nancy since she was 3. Mr. Drew's client is Merriam, who has had a guy selling estate books. He's Basswood. He has stopped giving her money for the books, though. There's the typical call threatening Nancy about getting involved. A guy comes in and attacks Hannah. George deals with him and he flees. Mr. Drew fights off another thug.

Chapter 2

The police catch one of the thugs. Nancy and the girls will go with Merriam to a yacht address. Nancy will go in disguise, becoming Debbie Lynbrook. Merriam tells them about the statue and that it has been stolen.

Chapter 3

Mr. Drew had been followed. Their phone lines had been cut. Ned comes over. Ned, Burt and Dave will join Nancy at Waterford. Some thug tries to kidnap all the girls.

Chapter 4

The girls get back to the thugs car and take it. Nancy calls the police. The girls take a boat out. Bess gets knocked overboard. The boat starts to capsize.

Chapter 5

The girls are rescued. Nancy asks about the whispering statue. The girls check a tool shed and find a statue. It seems to be the statue, but it doesn't whisper.

Chapter 6

Nancy thinks the statue is a copy of the original. The thugs try to take the statue. They go to Basswood's store. Nancy asks for a girl at the place.

Chapter 7

Nancy gets the job. Some thug had wanted to talk to Nancy at her home, so say Hannah. Nancy catches a guy stealing a book.

Chapter 8

Nancy goes to work. Ned comes in as part of her plan. George and Bert are in a boat race. Some guy claims there's a telegram for Nancy.

Chapter 9

Nancy and Ned are in a boat race. Some boat cuts they off but they win. They go to a party and see a statue. Nancy says it's whispering.

Chapter 10

The statue is not whispering. Ned says the statue makes sounds. Nancy finds the bookstore's accountant slumped in his chair.

Chapter 11

Basswood gets angry Nancy was in his office helping the guy with the heart attack. The statue is a fake.

Chapter 12

There is something that seems like an earthquake.

Chapter 13

It was an explosion in a gas main. Nancy sees a hidden door. The statuettes are also fake. The girls check hidden rooms and some thug comes in.

Chapter 14

The thug escapes. Nancy and George go out on a boat. Another boat tries to run them down. The girls go to an artist who makes copies of originals. Basswood shows up.

Chapter 15

George and Nancy watch Basswood and the other guy. Nancy finds pat of a note or letter.

Chapter 16

The note was from Basswood. He knows about the real whispering statue. The girls play ping pong. Basswood calls and wants Nancy to come to work early. Nancy overhears two guys talking about her.

Chapter 17

At work, basswood grabs Nancy and wants to know what she was doing at the shop of the guy who makes copies. George and Bess are to follow Basswood when he leaves the shop. Nancy stays there to work. Ned shows up. Books and picture frames are gone. Some thug grabs Nancy. Ned tackles him.

Chapter 18

The guy talks about being a trucker for Basswood. Police arrive and take the thug away. He was the man who forced his way into Nancy's house. Basswood is captured. Nancy talks to the police. Nancy thinks she knows where the statue is.

Chapter 19

Ned and Nancy go to where the statue is and it does look just like Nancy. The woman who had bought the statue is told by Nancy that the statue is stolen. Nancy gets a private detective involved. She gets the key to the store and goes to the copiest. Nancy is kidnapped and put into a statue mold.

Chapter 20

Bess and George realized what has happened to Nancy. Ned and Dick arrive and give chase. A state trooper stops the truck and Nancy is freed. The next day Mr. Drew explains various things, the statue whispers, and Basswood confesses.
