Emily Windsnap and the Castle in the Mist

We find out that, in the past, Neptune had married a land woman.

Emily's mother wants Emily to get a traditional, human education.

Meanwhile, Neptune is looking for some treasure that had been the krakens. Neptune appears to be basically a greedy, egocentric tyrant in these stories; there is nothing noble about him at all. Emily finds a ring, and also finds that she cannot take it off.

Neptune causes a storm in his anger, and it ends up moving their boat somewhere else in the sea, a place they can see a castle nearby. He also places a curse on Emily so she won't be fully human or fully mermaid.

He also bans any more intermarriage, and will not permit Emily's parents to see each other. Neptune and his wife had two kids, and, after her death, he cursed them so they would die at a young age.

Shona, Emily and Millie end up near a castle in the mist, and Emily finds another person like her in that castle. His mother is going to die soon due to Neptune's curse.

The rest of the story deals with the origin of the curse, the search for a second ring, and a resolution of whether or not her parents are going to get divorced.

It's a really good story, giving Neptune an explanation of why he is as nasty as he is. It also deals with the power of love over time. It's a really good book, even better than the other two.
